What is freight forwarding?

The vital link in your global supply chain.

Freight forwarding is the management of cargo movement from origin to destination: booking, documentation, customs clearance, and transport across sea, air, road, and rail. A freight forwarder doesn’t own the trucks, ships, or planes; they know exactly which ones to use and how to route your goods efficiently.

What separates Fn Customs from a standard forwarder is the customs expertise behind every shipment. Declarations, CHED certificates, anti-dumping assessments, Safety & Security filings, and origin verification are handled in-house as standard, so your goods don’t just move, they clear.

We hold direct contracts across the major shipping alliances, giving you access to competitive rates and reliable space on the sailings and flights you need, without the booking uncertainty smaller forwarders face.

Our advantage

Forwarding with customs clearance built in

Most forwarders subcontract customs work. We do it ourselves, which means fewer handoffs, fewer errors, and one point of contact for your entire shipment from booking to delivery.

Global reach

Direct contracts across the major alliances

Direct relationships with carriers across the 2M, THE Alliance, and Ocean Alliance ensure your cargo sails on the schedules you need, even when general allocation is tight.

Real-time visibility

Track your shipment at every stage

Live tracking from origin to delivery. When a status changes you’ll know before you need to ask, and exceptions are managed proactively, not reactively.

Cost optimisation

Save up to 35% per ocean shipment

Structured supply-chain data and container-utilisation analysis find genuine savings on ocean freight, not headline rates that don’t hold at booking.

Freight services

Every mode. Every route.

01

Sea Freight

Whether you need Full Container Load (FCL) or Less than Container Load (LCL), we maximise container utilisation to reduce your per-unit cost. Reefer containers available for temperature-sensitive cargo.

  • Full Container Load (FCL): 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft HC, all container types
  • Less than Container Load (LCL): consolidated groupage, port-to-port and door-to-door
  • Reefer containers: refrigerated and temperature-controlled sea freight
  • Road and sea groupage: UK-EU and worldwide consolidation
  • Express and deferred sailing options to balance transit time against cost
  • Guaranteed-space service on key Asia trades when allocation is tight
02

Road & Rail Freight

Full trailer and groupage services across the UK, EU, and beyond, with real-time tracking and a network of vetted road partners. Rail freight for high-volume routes where transit time and cost demand it.

  • Full trailer (FTL) and part-load (LTL / groupage) across Europe and the UK
  • UK-EU road groupage: weekly scheduled departures
  • Reefer road freight: temperature-controlled transport for food and pharma
  • UK-EU transit: trailer movements under T1 with NCTS management
  • Rail freight: block-train and intermodal from Asia and Europe
  • UK last-mile delivery: onward distribution to warehouse or fulfilment centre
03

Air Freight

When speed is the priority, our air freight services offer predictable, cost-controlled, tailored solutions. Direct relationships with carriers and consolidators get your urgent cargo where it needs to be.

  • Express air freight: priority handling and next-flight-out options
  • Deferred air freight: cost-optimised routing where next-day isn’t required
  • Air consolidation: groupage for smaller air consignments
  • Perishables and chilled goods: temperature control with priority clearance
  • Dangerous goods (DG): IATA-compliant handling and documentation
  • Airport-to-door delivery integrated with the air movement
04

Integrated Customs Clearance

Every freight movement we manage includes customs clearance as a built-in service, not an add-on. One team, one point of contact, one invoice, and no handoff risk between forwarder and broker.

  • Import declarations on CDS: accurate entry submission at the UK border
  • Transit documentation (T1 / NCTS) for goods under suspended duty
  • Food & drink IPAFFS pre-notifications and CHED coordination per shipment
  • Import VAT and Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) managed as part of the service
  • Anti-dumping duty assessment on subject goods before they arrive
  • Safety & Security (ENS) filings and HMRC audit-ready documentation
Sea freight

Optimised ocean service, route by route.

Our teams at origin and destination optimise each shipment for cost, route, or transit time. We don’t just send a booking form; we talk through the options and recommend the right call for your cargo.

Direct contracts across the major carrier alliances mean your cargo sails on the schedules you need with carriers you can trust, not whoever had space at the last minute.

Full Container Load

FCL: your goods, your container

Best for high-volume shipments that fill 20ft or 40ft containers. Faster transit, lower per-unit cost, and no co-loading risk. All container types, including reefer and open-top.

Less than Container Load

LCL: groupage for smaller volumes

Your cargo is consolidated with other shipments to fill a container. We maximise utilisation to save up to 35% per shipment versus booking directly with a carrier.

Reefer & Temperature-Controlled

Reefer sea containers

Refrigerated and temperature-controlled sea freight for food, pharmaceutical, and chemical cargo. Temperature monitoring, priority clearance, and CHED coordination included.

Road & Sea Groupage

UK-EU groupage consolidation

Combined road and sea groupage for smaller consignments between the UK and Europe. Weekly consolidation departures, competitive transit times, and full T1 transit management.

Air, road & rail

The right mode for the cargo.

Speed, cost, volume, and temperature decide the mode. We route across air, road, and rail, and combine them when an intermodal solution is faster or cheaper than any single leg.

Air freight

When transit time is the priority

Air freight is the fastest international option, ideal for urgent, high-value, perishable, or time-critical cargo. We balance express and deferred routing so you only pay for the speed you actually need.

  • Express & next-flight-out for time-critical consignments
  • Deferred air for cost-controlled routing
  • Perishables, pharma & chilled with priority clearance
  • IATA-compliant dangerous goods (DG) handling
  • Airport-to-door collection and delivery
Road & rail freight

Flexible, scheduled, and trackable

Road freight remains the backbone of UK-EU trade: flexible, door-to-door, and cost-effective. For high-volume long-haul lanes, rail and intermodal cut cost and carbon without the volatility of air.

  • FTL & LTL across the UK, EU and beyond
  • Weekly UK-EU groupage departures
  • Reefer road for temperature-controlled cargo
  • T1 transit & NCTS for trailers under suspended duty
  • Block-train & intermodal rail from Asia and Europe

Freight forwarding FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL shipping?

FCL (full container load) gives you a dedicated container, which is faster and usually better value once your cargo fills around half of it. LCL (less than container load) means sharing container space and paying only for the volume you use, which is ideal for smaller consignments.

What information do you need for a freight quote?

The cargo’s dimensions and weight, the pick-up and delivery points, your preferred mode (sea, air, road or rail) and your Incoterms. With that we can price the full door-to-door move, customs clearance included.

Do you handle customs clearance as part of freight forwarding?

Yes, that is our core strength. As an AEO-authorised customs broker and freight forwarder we manage the transport and the declarations under one roof, so nothing is lost between providers.

Can you move temperature-controlled or perishable cargo?

Yes. We arrange reefer containers for sea freight and chilled road trailers, with priority clearance paths for perishable food consignments.

Which routes and modes do you cover?

Sea freight (FCL, LCL and reefer), road trailer and groupage, express and deferred air freight, and rail freight, worldwide through direct carrier contracts.
